World History

Department of World History was established in 2004 when former Department of History was reorganized into School of History and Culture. It was based on the faculty members of original four teaching and research of sections of world history including Ancient World History, Medieval History, Modern World history and Contemporary World History. This new Department also consists of Institute of American Studies and some scholars who study Japanese History. Since the 1950s, World History as a major was well known for its textbooks and research, and many graduate students whose major was World History played important role in their classroom teaching and academic research. Some of them became very famous scholars both at home and abroad, for example, Lin Zhichun in the field of Ancient World History, Zhu Huan in Medieval History and Ding Zemin in the field of American History, all of whom are well established in Chinese historical community, and their contributions have laid solid foundation for future development. This first generation of scholars worked in close corporation and published World Ancient history: A Survey, multi-volume work, World General History: Ancient History ,World General History: the Middle Ages , and the relevant reference materials. In the 1990s, faculty members of the younger generation compiled an updated edition of Modern World History, and new edition of Concise World history and its matching reference materials World History in Multimedia Compact Discs , etc. These textbooks have exerted tremendous influence in world history in China . At present, the teachers in Department of world History are undertaking all required courses and elective courses for undergraduate and graduate students either on programs of correspondence education, or those on Ph. D and M.A. programs. At the same time, they also undertake the teaching task of the general-knowledge classes for students of other departments or school within the University.

There are sixteen faculty members in Department of World History, including seven doctorate advisers, ten professors (including advisers of PhD students), two associate professors, four lecturers. In terms of education attainment, twelve faculty members of them have received Ph. D degree, and another four members have completed M.A. studies. About fourteen teachers have either studied or have conducted research in overseas universities, of whom four scholars were on U.S. Fulbright Program. During last ten years, faculty members of World History Department have completed seven projects funded by Chinese Social Science Foundation, four projects financed by Ministry of Education, and dozens of minor projects funded either by Jilin Provincial Social Science Foundation, Changchun City or by Northeast Normal University. They have published more than 20 monographs by People's Press , Chinese Publishing House , Commercial Press and some other local publishing companies. Moreover, they have published hundreds of academic articles in periodicals like Historical Research , World History, Guangming Daily , America Studies, Japanese Studies . In 2000, the Department of World History set up the ”°Center for History of World Civilizations”± £¬ which was confirmed to be one of the hundred key research bases in the field of humanities and social sciences in China by Ministry of Education. In 2001, World History, as a major under the discipline of history, was entitled by Ministry of Education as one of the national key disciplines in China . Specific fields that are included on Ph.D. program are as follows: Western Cultural History, American Social history, History of U.S. foreign policy, Japanese History, Modern history of International Relations, European Medieval History, History of Roman Empire, and Byzantine History, all of these fields are Ph.D. and M.A. programs.
