History for Special Subjects as a major research field was originated from a Research Office for History of Chinese Northeast, which was established by Department of History since 1978 and was authorized to start M.A. Program in 1997.The major focus was on Northeast Ethnic and Frontier History, Feng faction Warlords History and Sino-Russian Relations. In close cooperation with faculty members of World History, Modern Chinese History, and Institute for Japanese Studies and the Regional Office of Chinese Social Sciences Academy (CASS), researchers in the area of History for Special Subjects gradually concentrated their efforts on International Relations in Northeast Asia , Japanese History, and History of Chinese Northeast. Since 2001 Intellectual History was added as a new area. And in 2003 Ph.D. Program was in operation.
Characteristics of the History for Special Subjects include studies of regional development, multidisciplinary methods, unique perspectives and future orientation. Geographically, it covers the studies of Northeast Asia (including Chinese northeast), which is also the place of intercourse for the powers and interests between the U.S., Russia, Japan and China, thereby raising many questions such as regional and global strategies, conflicts of interests for single or several countries, and ideology, all of which make this area as one of the most important regional questions. Future development of Japan and changes in the Korean Peninsula would produce, to some extent, impact on stability of China . From this point, the academic development of the History of Special Subjects is of academic and realistic significance. |
